We were excited and honored to have been chosen to head the Ironman 70.3 Triathalon Competition that was held here in Delaware County. Acting as water safety patrol for over 2300+ swimmers; witnessing the motivation and determination that each and every athlete had was an experience non of us will ever forget.
In conjunction with HERO'S USA, the AKA helped introduce 100's of new paddlers to the sport with the assist of the amazing folks at the Delaware Ohio, City Hall. Special thanks to all of the volunteers for which none of these event could be possible without their help and dedication.
HERO USA is proud to partner with MORPC on their great event series Riverfest!
Riverfest is a celebration of water, Ohio’s greatest resource. The purpose of Riverfest is to educate the public about the vital role waterways play in the region. By interacting with waterways and offering canoe and kayak paddles, people of all incomes and ages can develop a lifelong appreciation for this resource. Come join us for a celebration of our region's water resources along the Scioto River in Downtown Columbus. Riverfest will take place in conjunction with the Columbus Arts Festival on June 11th and 12th from 12pm-4pm. Bring your family and friends and spend Saturday with us canoeing, kayaking, and paddle-boarding along the Scioto River. On Sunday, watch a decorated boat float or transform your self-powered watercraft into a work of art by joining us for the inaugural MORPC Columbus Arts Festival Boat Show.
AKA, was happy to provide water safety patrol for 166 paddlers most of which had never paddled before; without an issue.
The AKA in conjunction with The Ohio River Rat Society were proud to be selected water safety volunteers for this years event. Come join us in the fun!
What/Why:A dragon boat is a twenty foot canoe with a decorative dragonhead on the front and a tail on the back. A drummer sits facing the paddlers and directs them with the beat of the drum. A steersman stands in the rear and guides the boat with a long, wooden oar. The paddlers sit two by two on ten benches. These individuals paddle the stroke in unison to fly the dragon across the water. It is this synchronicity that is the key to racing. Dragon boat racing is as amazing to be a part of as it is to watch.
Dragon boat racing is a sport for all. This fact is not true in many other sports. It is the teamwork, the synchronicity that moves the boat. Muscle is good, but not nearly as good as paddling together with the correct technique. It is not uncommon to watch seemingly "weaker" teams win races. It is about paddling as one and having "heart".
Dragon boating is a sprint sport. Races are typically 500m. We will be racing 300m races at the Dragon Boat Race Event. You will explode off of the start line and power through the finish. The race will last about two minutes. "That's all?", you may say, but trust me, sometimes that is a very long two minutes. Besides that, you'll have a few chances to race.
